Despite the fact that I grew up playing soccer, I’ve never been a big fan of watching matches on t.v. I don’t know, it seems like once you get good enough at playing soccer, the game is so strategic that it actually gets boring to watch. The games tend to be low scoring and spread out and in general I’d rather take a nap than watch the ball slowly move up and down the field for two 45 minute halves. But when the womens world cup came to the U.S. last year, and specifically California, I thought I would give watching soccer on t.v. another go.

As an adult, if you introduce enough friends, beer, chips, and heat into a small room to watch a women’s soccer game, it somehow becomes a lot more exciting. Not to mention that those women were buff as hell which made it fun to watch. Plus, after you’ve watched a few games you get to know the players and you get invested in whether they actually win or lose. The other cool thing was that there were a bunch of great ads during the games, showing girls and women doing all this kick ass sporty stuff, and although I was being manipulated by the capitalist economy, I still loved it.

We had such a good time, and got so into it, that Mitch, my dad, and I actually went to see a semi-final game between the U.S. and brazil. It was great! The crowd was super into it and it was excellent seeing all these young girls there watching. The U.S. women ended up winning the whole shooting match to become queens of the soccer world for a while. Next time the world cup comes around, try watching it, you might be surprised.
